AI and privacy

Where Sipher AI runs, what privacy mode turns off, the allow inbox read preference and the consent screen.

Where Sipher AI runs#

Sipher AI uses a model hosted on SipherMail’s own servers in the EU. Your content is not sent to a third-party AI provider. The consent screen also says your emails are not used to train AI models and are not sold or shared outside SipherMail.

Privacy mode#

Privacy mode turns off all Sipher AI features. While it is on:

  • The AI buttons in the composer and thread toolbar are disabled or hidden.
  • The Sipher AI chat is unavailable.
  • Memories are not read or saved.

To change it on web, use the Privacy Mode switch in the account menu, or open Settings > Privacy & AI and choose Privacy First or AI-Powered. In the mobile apps, use the Privacy Mode switch in your profile or settings.

The first time you choose AI-Powered, a screen titled A quick word about your data opens. It lists what is processed (email content you open or ask AI to help with, your writing style and preferences, and your Sipher AI conversations) and what is never done. Tick the box and choose I agree, switch to AI to continue. Switching back to Privacy First needs no consent.

Allow inbox read#

Sipher AI has an allow inbox read preference. When it is on, the chat can search your mailbox to answer questions and Memories can learn from your sent mail. When it is off, those two things stop. Choosing Privacy First in the mobile apps turns it off.
