Third-party mail apps

Connect Apple Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird and other apps to your SipherMail account with IMAP and SMTP and an app password.

You can read and send SipherMail mail from other mail apps. They connect over IMAP and SMTP using an app password, not your login password.

Before you start#

Create an app password at Settings > App Passwords. See App passwords for the steps. Use that password in the other app.

Automatic setup#

Apple Mail, iOS Mail, macOS Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook and Android mail apps can find the server settings by themselves through autoconfiguration. In most cases, add a new account, enter your SipherMail address and your app password, and let the app finish.

Settings > Mail Clients lists the first steps for each of these apps.

Manual settings#

If your app asks for the settings, use these.

Incoming (IMAP)Outgoing (SMTP)
Servermail.siphermail.commail.siphermail.com

UsernameYour full SipherMail addressYour full SipherMail address

Calendar and contacts#

The same page, Settings > Mail Clients, shows the CalDAV address for calendars and the CardDAV address for contacts. Use the same server name, your address and an app password. See Calendar and Contacts.

Things to know#

  • Mail you read and send in another app is ordinary mail, readable by the server like any other message.
  • Smart categories, message intent chips and scheduled send are features of the SipherMail apps. Do not expect them in other mail apps.
  • If a sign-in fails, check that you used an app password and your full address as the username. Then see Troubleshooting.
