Image privacy

How SipherMail removes known tracking pixels and loads remote images through its image proxy, and what that does not cover.

Marketing email often hides tiny images that tell the sender when and where you opened a message. SipherMail reduces this in two ways.

What SipherMail does#

MeasureWhat it does
Tracking pixel removalKnown tracking pixels are removed from mail. It matches patterns, so a new or unusual tracker can get through.
Image proxyRemote images load through SipherMail’s servers. The sender sees SipherMail’s server instead of your device.

What this does not do#

  • It does not stop all tracking. Pattern matching cannot catch every tracker.
  • Links in a message can still lead to pages that track you once you open them.

Settings#

On iPhone and Android, open the Email Privacy section in Settings. It has:

  • Block remote images: images stay unloaded until you tap Load images on that message. Loaded images still come through the proxy.
  • Block Tracking Pixels: stops senders tracking when you open emails.
  • Strip Tracking Parameters: removes tracking parameters from links.
  • Send read receipts: when a sender asks to know the message was read, send the receipt back.

On the web, the image privacy proxy is always on.

Read receipts#

Read receipts are a separate feature from tracking pixels. Only turn on sending them if you want senders to know you read their message.
