Smart categories

Sort your inbox into Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions, with Newsletters and Social as options you can switch on.

Smart categories put every inbox conversation into one category and show chips above the list so you can filter by category. SipherMail does the sorting on its servers.

On the web, smart categories are available now. On iPhone and Android they arrive with app version 1.6 or later.

The categories#

CategoryWhat goes there
PrimaryPeople, replies, and anything that does not fit elsewhere.
TransactionsOrders, receipts, invoices, payments and shipping.
UpdatesSecurity alerts, account notices, notifications and automatic mail.
PromotionsMarketing and discount mail.
NewslettersOther bulk mail you subscribed to.
SocialNotifications from social networks.

Each conversation has one category, based on its newest message. Mail from people you know, and personal replies, stay in Primary.

By default the chips are Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions. Newsletters and Social are off, and their mail shows under Updates until you switch them on. The chips only appear in the Inbox.

A chip’s badge counts unread conversations in that category.

Turn smart categories on or off#

  1. Open Settings > Mail.
  2. Find the Inbox categories card.
  3. Use Turn on smart categories. The switch is per user.
  4. Use Newsletters and Social to give those categories their own chips.

With the switch off you get the classic row: All, Unread, Starred, Attachments.

You may also see a prompt in the inbox with Turn on and Keep classic.

Correct a category#

Open the menu on a message row and choose Move to and a category, for example Move to Primary. SipherMail remembers the sender and files future mail from that address in the category you picked. A notice offers Undo.

Existing mail#

Mail already in your inbox is sorted too, so the chips are not empty when you first turn the feature on.
