An app password lets a mail app such as Thunderbird, Apple Mail or Outlook connect without using your main password. You can revoke one without affecting your account or other apps.
Create an app password#
- Go to Settings > App Passwords.
- Choose Generate.
- Under What’s this for?, enter a name, for example "Thunderbird on MacBook". Names are 2 to 32 characters.
- Choose Generate Password.
- Copy the password.
Use it in your mail app#
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Username | Your SipherMail address |
| Password | The app password, 16 characters, without hyphens |
| Incoming (IMAP) | mail.siphermail.com, port 993, SSL/TLS |
| Outgoing (SMTP) | mail.siphermail.com, port 587, STARTTLS |
Revoke an app password#
- Open Settings > App Passwords.
- Find it under Active App Passwords. Only the name is shown.
- Choose Revoke.
The app using it stops connecting. Revoke a password if you lose a device or stop using an app.
Good to know#
- Use one app password per app or device, so you can revoke just one.
See Third-party clients for app-specific setup.
