Browser extension

Show your unread count on a toolbar badge, see your latest five messages and open compose in one click, in Chrome, Edge and Firefox.

The SipherMail browser extension puts a small inbox view in your toolbar. It works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox 115 or later. It only reads. To write or read a message, it opens the web app.

What it shows#

  • A badge with your unread count in the inbox, refreshed every minute. It shows 99+ when there are more than 99.
  • A popup with your latest five inbox messages: sender, subject and how long ago.
  • Compose, which opens a new message in the web app, and Open inbox. Choosing a message also opens your inbox.

If the key stops working, the badge shows ! and the tooltip says why.

Set it up#

  1. In SipherMail, open Settings > Developer and create a key with the mail:read scope. See Authentication and keys.
  2. Add the extension to your browser. It is not in the Chrome Web Store or Firefox add-ons yet. In Chrome or Edge, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. In Firefox, open the debugging page and choose Load Temporary Add-on. Firefox removes a temporary add-on when it closes.
  3. Open the extension’s options.
  4. Enter your app address, for example https://app.siphermail.com, and paste the key.
  5. Choose Save and check key. Your browser asks to allow access to that one address. Allow it.

The extension checks that the key has the mail:read scope and shows the account it signed in to.

Your key#

The key is stored in the extension’s local storage on this device only. It is sent only to your app address, in the Authorization header. The extension asks for no access to other sites.

To sign out, choose Remove key in the options. That deletes the key from the device and drops the address permission. Also revoke the key in Settings > Developer.

Limits#

The extension counts only the inbox. It cannot send, reply, archive or search.
