A masked email is a random address, made of two words and four digits, that delivers to your main mailbox. Give it to a website or service instead of your real address. If the address starts to receive spam, switch it off. Mail sent to it then bounces.
Masked emails are on the web only, under Settings > Masked Emails.
Create one#
- Open Settings > Masked Emails.
- Select Generate alias.
- Select the copy icon beside the new address and paste it where you need it.
- Select the pencil beside No label and type what it is for, for example the name of the shop. Press Enter to save.
You cannot choose the address. SipherMail picks it for you. Mail to it arrives in your main mailbox like any other message.
Manage your aliases#
Each alias shows its address, its label, how many emails it has received and when it was last used.
| Control | What it does |
|---|---|
| Switch | Turns the alias off or on. While it is off the row is dimmed and mail to it bounces. |
| Bin icon | Deletes the alias for good, after a confirmation. Mail to it bounces forever. |
Switching an alias back on makes it work again. Deleting does not.
Limits#
The page shows N of M aliases used. The number you can have depends on your plan. See pricing. When you reach it, Generate alias is disabled until you delete one or upgrade.
Things to know#
- A masked address is for receiving. The composer does not offer it as a From address, so a reply goes out from one of your other addresses. Think about that before you reply to a site you gave a masked address.
- Do not use a masked address as your recovery email. It must be an external address.
- A plus address is different: your real username stays visible in it.
